With 25 listings in the National Register of Historical Places, St. Mary's County is a treasure trove of colonial history, unspoiled wetlands and historical firsts. Established in 1637, St. Mary's County was the first colony to practice religious tolerance, and to establish peaceful relations with the native Indians. As the site of Maryland's first capital, St. Mary’s County was also the first community to place an African-American in a governmental position, and the site of the first request for women's suffrage.
Several don’t-miss opportunities include the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and the National Wildlife Visitors Center and Research Refuge. Visit the Riverwalk on Solomans Island, tour the Drum Point Lighthouse, enjoy a concert at the Calvert Marine Museum, or just kick back and relax at one of the many waterfront dining establishments.
